What is the best possible diet to feed a dog?
February 20, 2009 - Is it true that it's best for them to eat meat and vegies, and fruit just like us? I've heard people talk about a natural diet with this, but I thought dogs were supposed to eat dog food?
Is there a best brand of dog food, or should I cook meat for my dog?
- FOOD.
- No. It's not best for them to eat the same foods we eat. Grapes and raisins, onions, etc are poisonous to dogs. Talk to your vet about a diet.
That is true that the meat, veggies, and fruits are good for them especially there coats. My dogs will actually wait for a carrot like they would a bone. They are suppose to eat dog food, table scraps are pretty bad for their digestive track, now yea once in awhile spoiling them a bit and giving them a bite isn't going to hurt but you shouldn't do it all the time. A good brand of dog food is anything with a high number of protein. I'm not sure where you live or what type of stores you have and I have to order my dog food threw a feed mill so I can't give you the name of a branbecauseue it will probably be different. But the higher the protein percentage the better. Oh and heres just a random fact if your dog has dry skin at the grocery store there is an oil called Safflower Oil, should be right with the olive oil. It's inexpensive and works great they really like it just pour a table spoon over there food when you feed them. Hope I helped.
A diet of raw meat such as beef lamb chicken or kangaroo, vegies rice pasta and fruit is fine. As someone else said avoid onions grapes raisins as these are toxic to dogs. I cook up soup mix mixed with rice pasta and vegies mix it with raw meat and quality dry food. The odd can of sardines is great for their coat. Avoid pork as this is too fatty and can cause pancreatitis in dogs which can is extremely painful and fatal if not treated quickly. Canned food is basically rubbish... Google the BARF diet for more options
- I feed mine nothing animals that I can catch in the wild, which tend to be a lot healthier for dogs since it's more like what they'd naturally eat. If you don't have a gun/bow, roadkill works fine too.
His best diet is a meat filled diet. A natural diet can be any of the following: Homemade, BARF, and Prey Model Raw feeding. Nope dog food has only been around 50 years or so. You best dogs diet is a raw fed diet. It is a diet that takes your full dedication, but once you get the hang of it, the diet is one of the best. http://www.rawfed.com/myths http://www.rawlearning.com http://www.rawmeatybones.com http://www.barfworld.com http://www.drpitcairn.com Good foods have lots of meat in them. Look at innova dog foods ingredients or Evos and that is the high standard of that company that all dog foods IMO should follow in the amount of meat put into their foods. Your dog really doesnt need fruits and veggies. The body doesnt digest them unless they are predigested for the dog. A couple good books for raw feeding beginners I recommend: Carina MacDonald: Raw dog food: Make it easy for you and your dog. Tom Lonsdale: Work Wonders As for premade dog food: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com http://www.dogfoodproject.com
Ideally, dogs should have a natural diet which includes a balance of meat, veggies and carbohydrates. But considering how difficult it can be for a human to eat right, it's probably not easy to create a homemade diet for your dog. I recommend selecting a high quality dog food (Wellness brand is a good choice) and adding some meat and veggies to it. That way you can get balanced nutrients as well as the benefits of fresh foods.
I feed BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diet. That and prey model feeding are considered to be the best ways to feed a dog when done correctly. BARF has fruit and vegetables and very select pre digested grains as well as meat, prey model is all meat. Just do some research on both feeding habits ADD: My dogs are fed kangaroo meats, raw meaty bones (mostly chicken), vegetables (spinach, sweet potato, carrot, watercress), fruit as snacks, select grain mixes which are pre digested, organ meats and a multivitamin/mineral for dogs daily..
